Good sh*t | August 2022
august is basically one long sunday, and nothing cures the sunday scaries like retail therapy
Buy these:
The rare Amazon set that actually feels great to both move in and wear all day and looks much more expensive than it is.
Is this solar powered phone charger not the coolest thing you’ve ever seen?!
I’m having a *moment* with pajamas sets lately, nothing makes you feel more put together at 6am than waking up in something silky and matchy (and that isn’t a t-shirt and my fiancés briefs). If you catch me wearing this floor length nightgown (with pockets!!!!) out on the town as a dress…no you didn’t. Use code HELENPGIFT20 for 20% off Lunya.
I wore these shades for my civil ceremony and there about to get a ton of wear during my destination wedding and honeymoon! I love that they feel high quality without being so expensive I feel bad about throwing them in my beach bag.
If you’re new around here you know I’m equal parts fascinated and horrified by plastic surgery culture (and think everyone should do what makes them happy while examining why we as a culture feel compelled to change out appearances so drastically be it through fitness or injectables) and I’ve added this novel about an influencer who wants to undergo reversal surgery for all her cosmetic interventions at the risk of her life who gets entangled in a #MeToo investigation to my “to read” list.
I’ve never felt quite as 31 as I did when I broke out this foldable Baggu sun hat at my best friend’s bachelorette boat cruise last month. Not only did I feel v dramatique with the wide brim, but the neck tie made it safe to wear it on the boat (and can be tucked away if you don’t like that look) AND it folded into my purse when the sun went down. The only improvement I might suggest to the the Baggu gods would be to make it UPF— even still, my face remained unburned after several hours on the water. I may have to get another colorway for my honeymoon…
I can’t stop making the watermelon pizza from last week’s LOOKIN LIKE A SNACK —check out the archive for the directions/shopping list (it’s idiot-proof!)
We’ve somehow made it a full year with just a tiny 8x10 size cutting board that we grabbed at Target when we first moved into our current apartment (we left our big meal sized cutting board upstate at the Airbnb) and I finally ordered this fun (and more importantly, large) checkerboard cutting board. Disclaimer: the first one arrived damaged, but I exchanged it and the 2nd one was perfect! No more trying to cut on a ceramic plate and a low risk way to experiment with the checkerboard trend without committing too hard.
On that note, I’m not gonna pretend like I don’t regularly spend $7 at my local coffee shop on an iced oat milk latte (#bipride) just to feel something, but on the days I remember, I make my own iced coffee at home and this cold brew maker does the trick!
Read/listen to these:
One of those stories about Gen Z that makes you feel a bit less doomsday about the world falling apart around you.
I don’t think “hotness” has ever JUST been about appearance, we are always attracted to confidence, but as Jessica Defino pointed out in her newsletter, confidence tends to be a lot more attainable for the already good looking. In any event. I’m all for us redefining beauty to be more than skin-deep!
Yannick and I had date night at Place des Fêtes in Cobble Hill recently and I can’t recommend enough (neither can The New Yorker).
Another New Yorker gem “I’m not like other tourists, I’m a cool tourist” is me anytime we go anywhere with my French in-laws…Listen, I never want to look like an “ugly American” but we do do some things better and among those things are: iced coffee (in a to go cup), peanut butter, non-dairy milk alternatives, air conditioner absolutely everywhere, and firework displays. But that’s about it. 🤷♀️
This one’s for my fellow ADHD people— just stumbled upon the Hacking Your ADHD podcast, and I’ve only made it through a few episodes but I’ve found something useful in each one—check it out if you’re on a quest to make your squiggly brain to cooperate!
